Barstool Chicago College Basketball Coach Draft Grades
Round 1 Pick 1: John Wooden, Carl
I mean yeah. He has the most national championships ever. I think a lot of people kinda forget he exists in everyday life, but when you say his name people will go "oh yeah that's the guy with all of the national championships". It's a good pick, very solid.
Grade: A+
Round 1 Pick 2: Jim Calhoun, Chief
Great pick. Calhoun is an absolute all-time coach. I think he kinda also gets a little forgotten behind some of the other big coaches like K, Williams, Boheim, etc. I also don't really think this is a reach, Calhoun is an absolutely tremendous coach. Also, not a dime back.
Grade: A+
Round 1 Pick 3: Bobby Knight, Dave
Good pick. I mean there isn't much to say about the no-brainer picks. Bobby Knight was kind of the model for the insane college basketball coach that we've all grown to love. Throwing the chair, screaming at the refs, choking a kid, and an undefeated season. He's just the complete package for a legendary coach.
Grade: A+
Round 1 Pick 4: Bo Ryan, Frank
Ummm yeah, I get it. Who's he supposed to pick right? If Kaminsky wasn't in the draft, Bo might not get picked, if he does it's late in the draft. I don't think the pick is awful because he was a very good coach and made a couple pretty good tourney runs. But I just can't give him a good grade in the first round.
Grade: C+
Round 1 Pick 5: Coach K, Eddie
No. Also, Big Cat has next to nothing with making people hate Coach K online, he is one of the most hateable people in sports. I get it he's an amazing coach, but I can't applaud the pick. He's a slimy, weasel, Rat Man who fakes injuries and makes everything about himself. Fuck Coach K, Fuck Grayson Allen, Fuck Christian Laettner, Fuck JJ Reddick, Fuck the Brotherhood, Fuck Cameron Crazies, and Fuck Duke. I'm done. That felt good.
Grade: F
Round 2 Pick 1: Jim Valvano, Eddie
Going from all-time bad guy to all-time good guy with this one. Jimmy V is a great story and a really good coach. A great pick to try and win people back after the K pick. With all of that being said, he is a good coach but not a tremendous one. A good pick though.
Grade: A-
Round 2 Pick 2: Geno Auriemma, Frank
Great pick. Probably the most dominant coach in basketball history. His run at UCONN has been unmatched by anyone in history. Very strong pick from Frank.
Grade: A
Round 2 Pick 3: Pat Summit, Dave
A very strong pick from Dave. I never watched the Tennessee women's team with her, but I know how good she was. Also, not too many men's basketball courts are named after a women's coach, which just proves how good she was.
Grade: A
Round 2 Pick 4: John Chaney, Chief
I think it's a good pick, but a bit of a reach from Chief. He is a very good coach, but he just doesn't have quite the name value as some of the other people that could've been taken.
Grade: B
Round 2 Pick 5: Dean Smith, Carl
I mean he's a good pick. I really don't think the name value holds up as well as it should. He's an excellent coach and made Carolina a blue blood program. Just a strong selection.
Grade: A
Round 3 Pick 1: John Calipari, Carl
I think Cal is a bit overrated. He obviously has a national championship and is a good recruiter, so I know he's good. But, he constantly does less with more. His teams are always uber-talented and seem to fall short of expectations. I know he can't win a national championship every year, but he has to have more than one with the talent he has brought through. It also doesn't help that he just got bounced in the first round.
Grade: B
Round 3 Pick 2: John Thompson, Chief
It's a very solid pick. Thompson is a very good coach and he is obviously well known for his game against Carolina in the national championship. I do think it was a bit of a reach in the third round. He's a good coach, but there is a handful I would've taken before him.
Grade: B
Round 3 Pick 3: Tom Izzo, Dave
Very good value in the third round. Tom Izzo is a very good coach. With that being said, I hate the guy. As a Big Ten fan, it's annoying to see how much he works the refs without getting technicals. But I can't deny he's good. I think the whole January, February, Izzo thing is stupid, he just isn't that anymore. Also, it's very surprising he only has one national championship.
Grade: A-
Round 3 Pick 4: Mark Few, Frank
Reach and a half. Few is a great coach, don't get me wrong. He has made Gonzaga a machine, but I just think he could've gotten him later in the draft. I also don't like him because he said Maryland had bad fans. But anyways, he's a good coach and I think a lot of recency bias will help him here.
Grade: B+
Round 3 Pick 5: Jay Wright, Eddie
Incredible value pick. Villanova is a contender year in and year out. He's got two natties and honestly has a good chance to win a third this year. Not a whole lot to say really, Wright is just a good coach.
Grade: A
Round 4 Pick 1: Bob Huggins, Eddie
Honestly, had no idea Huggins had that many wins in his career. Good for him. He's such a loveable guy and a very good coach. The press Virginia teams a few years ago were fun to watch. He always just radiates some good energy and everyone likes him.
Grade: A
Round 4 Pick 2: Bill Self, Frank
I honestly feel like Bill Self is a coach that is often forgotten. It feels like Kansas is bigger than him and he has gone to the wayside beneath the Jayhawk brand. I mean he's a good coach and was a bit surprised he lasted this long, but I honestly wouldn't have thought to pick him.
Grade: A-
Round 4 Pick 3: Roy Williams, Dave
Incredible value in the fourth round right here. I've always liked Roy, he seems like a nice guy. He has three championships, nine final fours, and a ton of legendary games against Duke. It's a very good pick, especially in the fourth round.
Grade: A+
Round 4 Pick 4: Gene Cady, Chief
Not a very flashy pick from Chief right here. Cady is a fine coach, but I think there was a handful of coaches that could've been taken over him. He is certainly not a massive name brand like some other coaches, but he obviously isn't bad. I think there could have been better ones though.
Grade: B-
Round 4 Pick 5: Bill Donovan, Carl
The back-to-back national championships is a feat that may never be matched again due to the nature of college basketball and the NBA draft. He's been a very good coach at both the NBA and college levels. He is a very good pick, especially in the fourth round.
Grade: A
Round 5 Pick 1: Jim Boeheim, Carl
Good pick. He always makes his run in March, he never had a losing season until this year, and he runs the weird defense. I don't really like the guy, he seems like a dick in my opinion. But he's a very good coach.
Grade: A+
Round 5 Pick 2: Mike Brey, Chief
Ehhhh. He's a good coach, but I definitely wouldn't have taken him. He did build a good program at Notre Dame, but the pick isn't flashy or anything. I don't think he should've been picked.
Grade: C+
Round 5 Pick 3: Rick Pitino, Dave
If you went in a lab to design the most stereotypical slimy college basketball coach, you'd get Rick Pitino. I mean he's an all-time asshole, scumbag, loser, but damn he can win. He actually may be the best X's and O's coach ever. Incredible pick in the fifth round.
Grade: A+
Round 5 Pick 4: Brad Stevens, Frank
I love the pick from Frank right here. Stevens was an incredible college coach and it's amazing what he got out of Butler. I truly wish he was back in college basketball.
Grade: A
Round 5 Pick 5: Frank Martin, Eddie
Ehh. Frank Martin isn't anything special, there is a handful of coaches I probably would've taken before him, but its whatever. Eddie likes him so I can't bash the pick too much.
Grade: C+
A very good draft. There were a bunch of good picks in the draft, but I think one stands above the rest. White Sox Dave's draft didn't have any holes in it, very good draft top-to-bottom.
Predicted Winner: Dave
Predicted Loser: Chief
